Epsom & Ewell Borough Council has begun the first phase of a long-term tree-planting drive that aims to establish 6,000 new trees across the borough by 2035. Since 7 January the council has already put 2,600 saplings in the ground at sites including Ewell Court Park, the Hogsmill Local Nature Reserve and London Road recreation ground. Funded through the Forestry Commission’s Local Authority Treescapes scheme, the project forms part of the council’s wider climate-change action plan and tree-management strategy. Councillors say the new trees will combat ash-dieback losses, boost biodiversity and help the borough reach its net-zero target by 2035.
