ESG Today writes: "Netflix Signs 15-Year Carbon Credit Deal to Help Landowners Transition Fields into Forests".
In summary:
Netflix has entered into a 15-year agreement to purchase verified carbon credits from the American Forest Foundation (AFF), supporting its Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR) carbon project, specifically the “Fields & Forests” (F&F) initiative. AFF, a conservation nonprofit established in 1981, works with family-owned forests to promote sustainable forestry and conservation efforts.
The F&F project assists small-acreage landowners in the U.S. South in converting underused fields into productive forests. AFF addresses previous barriers—such as high upfront costs and complexity—by covering all site preparation, planting, and offering ongoing technical support, along with annual payments during the 30-year contracts.
So far, the project has enrolled 2,500 acres and aims to reach 75,000 acres by 2032, potentially generating up to 4.8 million carbon credits. Netflix’s investment will help initiate the first 6,000 acres and expand the project across the southern U.S. through milestone-based prepayments—an innovative funding approach tied to enrollment benchmarks.
John Ringer of AFF praised the collaboration, stating Netflix’s move demonstrates how financing combined with scientific-backed natural climate solutions can effectively support rural communities, conservation, and family-owned forests. He added that this model could serve as an example for other companies to follow.and follows a similar move by Microsoft toward timber-based data center construction.
